This album as it is with all the others offered on sale is the trademark of music from a "golden era" of NYC jazz. From the earliest days of stride piano playing to the current modernists this music capitol of modern jazz was nurtured with the piano fingerprints of great players nationally and internationally. A perfect example credited on these albums: is the late Albert (Al) Dailey. Of course, his Art Tatum like facility, intellectual capacity and powerful approach to the fundamentals of jazz are exclusive assets to this swinging rhythm section. Let your ears and respect for good music decide the quality of this performance.... As Duke Ellington said: "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing". A founding musical member of the ANYC Jazz Festival, Dailey who hailed from Baltimore (the home of great stride piano players) became an essential contributor to the NYC jazz world since 1960 to his transiting in the 1980s. (His bio is detailed on his other recordings presented in these releases on Bandcamp).... The other members of this Cadillac rhythm section who's work inspired the trumpet voice of Reece on this recording are established veterans of the NYC scene:
ALBERT DREARS (AL), an early stalwart of the drums, during the modern jazz era of the 1960s, Drears credentials makes him one of the very important percussionist of this music. He hails from Key West, Florida. His father played the trumpet and Al was heavily influenced by his childhood acquaintance, the incomparable trumpeter Fats Navarro. An early resident on the New York scene since 1949, he began his road work with the great Paul Williams band in 1953-4 and continued to lend his important work with the heavyweights such as Charles Mingus, Randy Weston, Kenny Burrell, Gigi Gryce, Phineas Newborn to name a few in live and recorded performances. He led his own group and worked with many other small groups. His drumming on this recording summarized his work in 1984. Dig his sense of swing here. Into 2011 of the 21st century, Drears continued to be a vibrant spirit on the New York scene. He transited on Nov. 19, 2011 at his residence with his family in NYC, Harlem to be specific.
CALVIN HILL, a long time resident on the New York scene, Hill has worked and recorded with the cream of the crop, Max Roach, Jackie Paris, and many others, most currently with Spirit Of Life ensemble. A stalwart on the contra bass, his impeccable work lends itself to any classical musical situation, and is, especially of inestimable value to any jazz rhythm section. As a founding musical member of the NYC Jazz Festival, his work is encountered on many of its (archival catalogue) recordings. Today, great jazz bass players are not that readily available. Fortunately for the world of modern jazz, Hill the veteran of innumerable musical performances, is available in body mind and spirit, alive and well where he resides in New Jersey with his wife and family. We hope that this album of sincere music conveys its best wishes to its listeners.
